Sleep apnea disrupts the sleep of many people, and for those using a CPAP mask, nasal congestion can make wearing the mask even more challenging. Here are some tips to help you breathe better at night, even with a stuffy nose:
- Mask seal : A proper mask seal is essential. Without it, your device's humidifier will not be able to deliver enough moisture.
- Moisturize the air: Maximize the humidity level of your device without causing condensation inside your mask. This largely depends on the temperature and humidity of your bedroom (ideally, keep it above 20°C/68°F). A room that is too cold may increase condensation in the mask.
- Heated tubing: Increase the temperature of your tubing to above 27°C (80.6°F).
- Clear your sinuses: Use a saline spray or rince before bed to clear your airways.
- Change your sleeping position: If you are congested, try sleeping on your back or slightly adjusting your head position to make breathing easier. Using a pillow that supports the head and neck can also help open the airways and improve airflow.
If congestion persists, do not hesitate to consult your doctor or respiratory therapist to adjust your treatment.
Take care and sleep well.
